Why a Mailbox Revival Week? Mailboxes were the internet of the 80s / early 90s. Again and again users ask for still existing mailboxes and want to relive the feeling of that time. Today, it is hardly worthwhile to operate a mailbox permanently via the telephone line. It is slow, error-prone and may cost money. A limited period of time - the Mailbox Revival Week - shall animate as many mailboxes as possible to be reachable at this time and thus motivate users to get hard-/software from the attic to be active for one week and to "surf" like in the 80s. Possibilities for (temporary) SysOps:

Using old existing (original) mailboxes.

Set up existing mailbox program and hook it to the phone line.

Program your own mailbox

Possibilities for everyone:

Try out hardware, experience mailbox feeling

If necessary, a purchase of hardware (modem) is worthwhile

Greetings left on the drives of many mailboxes

A Bulletin Board System (BBS) was mostly called a Mailbox in Germany. A user dials a normal telephone number via the telephone line (by hand or by modem) and a mailbox program recognizes this call and accepts it automatically (in rare cases the SysOp also pushes the punch from the telephone fork and presses a key on the keyboard to start the mailbox). The user uses a terminal program that mainly sends keyboard output via the rs232 interface. The mailbox sends text and usually mirrors the user's input when input is expected, i.e. it sends the character back so that it also appears on the user's screen. You must have experienced it ;)

An entry of an operated mailbox on https://mrw.ums.pm would be good to have a complete list of all participating mailboxes. Only the specified data will be published. To activate the entry and to change status or other details an email address is needed and stored, but not published. A login / account is not required. Also no cookies.

Recommended Modem Settings Prefered is CCITT not BELL. Please make a note, if your Mailbox uses only BELL. To CALL a Mailbox, the Modem is usually in Orginate Mode. The Mailbox Modem is in answer Mode. Some Command that my work with your modem: atb0 ...............(CCITT) AT&Q3 ..............(Synchron Modus) AT+MS=0,0,300,300 ..(300 Baud fixed) or AT+MS=v21,0,300,300 (incomplete)
